Mauritania: Nationwide protests remain possible over fuel price hikes through at least early August

Further protest remain possible over fuel prices hikes across Mauritania through at least early August.

Warning

Event

Further nationwide protests remain possible over increased fuel prices through at least early August. The country has been rocked by demonstrations in several cities since July 15, when the government imposed a 30 percent fuel price hike. Reports suggest that the country's main opposition party, National Rally for Reform and Development (NRRD) is organizing protests on July 24. Specific start times and locations have not been provided; however, gatherings are likely to be held in the capital Nouakchott, Zouerat, and other major cities.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy a heavy security presence in protest-affected areas. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially during large gatherings and marches. Protestors may clash with police if officers attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. Security forces have used tear gas to disperse previous demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to reach destinations in protest-affected areas. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
