Authorities have launched an investigation to identify the cause of the blast and apprehend the perpetrators. There have been no claims of responsibility as of yet.
The incident comes after officials in Togo declared a state of security emergency June 13 in the northern Savanes Region bordering Burkina Faso. Officials cited the latest attacks targeting security personnel in the region as the reason for the state of emergency; these include in Kpendjal Prefecture overnight May 10-11, killing eight, and Nov. 10-11. The measure will remain in force through at least Sept. 13.
