UK: Several strikes by unionized rail workers planned nationwide through July and August /update 1

Unionized rail workers to hold several strikes across the UK July 23, 27, 30, and Aug. 18, 20; major travel disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Unionized UK railway workers represented by the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT) and the Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen (ASLEF) are to strike on several dates throughout July and August. The strikes have been called to demand increased pay in line with inflation and assurances of no compulsory job losses.

  • July 23: ASLEF strike affecting Greater Anglia services, including Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport (STD).

  • July 27 and Aug. 18, 20: RMT strikes impacting Network Rail and all train operating companies.

  • July 30: ASLEF strike affecting Arriva Rail London, Chiltern Railways, Great Western, Greater Anglia, Hull Trains, LNER, Southeastern, and West Midlands Trains.

The strikes, should they go ahead, will cause significant disruption to the UK's rail network, with up to 40,000 employees taking part. Lingering disruptions will likely affect rail services after the strikes conclude as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding, while significant congestion is likely on alternative means of transport. RMT and ASLEF workers may organize demonstrations, which may cause localized disruption. Further strikes are possible over the coming months.

Context

The government is seeking to transform rail services, given reduced passenger numbers and high subsidies after the COVID-19 pandemic, and have not ruled out up to 2,500 job cuts. Negotiations between unions and the government have stalled; nonetheless, strike action could be averted if the parties make progress.

Advice

Avoid travel on the affected dates. For essential travel, confirm rail services and allow extra time for journeys. Consider alternative transport and book reservations in advance due to increased demand. Follow local travel advice.
