US: Abortion rights groups likely to continue demonstrating nationwide through late July /update 3

Abortion rights activists likely to continue protesting across the US through late July following Supreme Court ruling.

Informational

Event

Abortion rights activists are likely to continue staging protests in multiple locations across the US through at least late July in response to a Supreme Court decision that overturned a 1973 ruling establishing the right to an abortion nationwide. Abortion rallies and marches will likely occur in state capitals and major cities.

Related protests are scheduled to be held at the following places and times:

July 16

  • Charlotte, North Carolina: Freedom Park, 12:00

  • Santa Monica, California: Rally at Santa Monica City Hall, 10:00, with a subsequent march to Planned Parenthood office

July 17

  • Saint Paul, Minnesota: Rally at Saint Paul College, 11:00, with a subsequent march to Minnesota State Capitol

  • Boston, Massachusetts: Massachusetts State House, 14:00

Government buildings, including federal courts, will likely be used as rallying points for any further demonstrations. Protesters will also likely continue to demonstrate outside of the US Supreme Court and the US Capitol in Washington, DC. Unauthorized personnel are prohibited from accessing the Supreme Court building and authorities have built a protective fence around the site due to the likelihood of large protests. Additional security measures will likely be implemented around government buildings and critical infrastructure across the country.

While demonstrations will likely vary in size, heightened security and localized transport disruptions are possible near any protests that materialize. Counterprotests are likely in major cities. Clashes between opposing groups are possible; skirmishes between protesters and police also cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard security precaution. Allow additional time to reach destinations near announced rally sites. If violence occurs, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Do not attempt to drive through protester-erected roadblocks. Heed the instructions of local authorities.
