Informational

Event

The Government of Uzbekistan canceled the state of emergency and rescinded the associated curfew in the autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan as of July 21. The early termination of the month-long state of emergency, which began July 2, came after the restoration of order in the region following deadly protests and clashes July 1-2; the demonstrations materialized in reaction to proposed changes to Karakalpakstan's autonomous status. Authorities have also lifted restrictions on entry to and exit from the region, and the additional security forces deployed to the region under the state of emergency have started to withdraw.

Residual security-related transport and business disruptions are likely throughout Karakalpakstan over the coming days until the situation completely normalizes.

Advice

Plan accordingly for residual transport and shipping delays through late July. Consider making alternative arrangements for critical freight shipments.
