A magnitude-5.8 earthquake occurred near the coast of Vanuatu's Espiritu Santo island at around 04:50 VUT July 15. The epicenter was about 28 km (17 miles) west of Port Olry, Vanuatu. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 23 km (14 miles), and severe shaking was reported in parts of Espiritu Santo near the epicenter, with light-to-moderate shaking felt in other parts of the island. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is possible. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
