Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) to strike across Bhola District, Barisal Division, 06:00-18:00 Aug. 4; protests and clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) plans to strike across Bhola District, Barisal Division, 06:00-18:00 Aug. 4. Organizers have called for the work stoppage to denounce the fatal wounding of the local district president of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) student wing of the BNP during clashes with police July 31; the clashes came amid a demonstration in Bhola protesting power cuts and rising prices of essential goods.

While specific details regarding possible strike-related demonstrations were not immediately announced, BNP activists may hold protests near BNP offices, government buildings, public squares, major markets, and press clubs. Thousands may participate in the strike and any related protests; some 4,000 protesters participated in the BNP-organized demonstration in which the district president was critically wounded July 31.

Business disruptions are likely in Bhola District during the strike period. Security personnel will likely monitor any large gatherings. Activists may block or march on roadways, prompting localized traffic disruptions. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out, especially if security forces attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators. Violent altercations between supporters of rival parties are also possible during or immediately after any related demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid any protests that materialize due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Plan for localized disruptions and allow additional travel time near demonstration sites. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
