Informational

Event

Supporters of the Azimio la Umajo-One Kenya Coalition gathered near the Supreme Court in Nairobi on Aug. 22 in support of party leader Raila Odinga. Odinga is petitioning the Court to challenge the Aug. 9 presidential election results, alleging irregularities. Security forces have reportedly cordoned off the area.

An increased security presence is likely near the Supreme Court in the coming hours. Localized traffic disruptions are likely in the area until supporters disperse. Security forces may attempt to disperse the gatherings should supporters become disruptive.

Context

The Supreme Court has 14 days from Aug. 22 to study the case and confirm the election results. If the election is annulled, a new election must be held within 60 days.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) declared Kenya Kwanza Alliance party leader, Willian Ruto, as the winner on Aug. 15, taking 50.5 percent of the vote against 48.8 percent for Odinga. Four of the seven electoral commissioners initially rejected the election results, citing irregularities.

Advice

If operating in Kenya, exercise increased personal vigilance. Avoid all demonstrations and associated gatherings due to the possibility of violence. Keep away from areas where security personnel appear to be deploying. If clashes break out nearby, take shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Heed all instructions from security personnel, and allow additional travel time near gatherings.
