Informational

Event

Unionized employees of Ogero telecommunications company are observing an open-ended strike as of Aug. 31. Since Aug. 25, employees of two other Lebanese telecommunications companies, Touch and Alfa, have likewise observed an indefinite strike. The action has been taken to protest an impasse during salary negotiations. The labor action could result in communications disruptions across Lebanon, particularly if the work stoppage becomes protracted.

Striking workers could stage demonstrations as part of their labor action, though any actions that do take place will likely be small. Officials will likely deploy police to monitor and manage the crowd. Some road travel disruptions are likely. Violence is unlikely.

Advice

Consult with trusted local sources for updates concerning the strike. Avoid any protests as a standard precaution. If operating or traveling near protest locations, allow additional time to reach destinations due to the potential for localized transport disruptions. Plan accordingly for sporadic communications disruptions.
