Mexico: Security operation ongoing in response to criminal activity in Zacatecas State, late Aug. 28
Security operation ongoing in Zacatecas State, Mexico, late Aug. 28. Tight security, transport disruptions likely. Violence possible.
Event
Federal security forces are carrying out operations in several locations in Zacatecas State, as of late Aug. 28, in response to the activities of drug-trafficking organizations (DTOs). The Mexican Army and National Guard have deployed personnel to secure the state after DTOs set up blockades of burning vehicles and improvised tire-puncturing devices on several highways in the state; there are also unconfirmed reports of violence between armed civilian groups Aug. 27 and 28. Affected roads include:
Highway 45 between Zacatecas City and Fresnillo
Highway 54 between Zacatecas City and Villanueva
Highway 23 between Fresnillo and Jerez
Highway 44 between Fresnillo and Valparaiso
Security forces are currently working to clear and secure highways in the state. The army and national guard have also deployed armed patrols to the streets of Fresnillo, Jerez, and Zacatecas City. Some sources suggest that this recent violence is motivated by conflict between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (Cartel de Jalisco Nuevo Generacion, CJNG), two of Mexico's largest DTOs. There are no confirmed reports of casualties from this incident; however in recent weeks, there has been extensive violence in the Zacatecas State involving DTOs that have killed several people.
Heightened security in Zacatecas State, particularly in Zacatecas City, Fresnillo, and Jerez and surrounding highways, are almost certain into Aug. 29. Disruptions to local traffic are likely. Further violence between criminals and security forces is possible.
Advice
Consider delaying travel to affected regions until security operations are complete. Avoid traveling on affected roads until they are secured. Monitor local media for developments. Avoid areas of ongoing security operations. Plan for local traffic disruptions if you are traveling. Do not attempt to circumvent blockades; wait for authorities to dismantle them. Comply with all directives given by authorities.
