Papua New Guinea will mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Milne Bay in Alotau Aug. 26-28. Commemorations will begin with events in the Kaloi, Wahuhuba, Taudikwa, and Top Town areas Aug. 26. Government officials and foreign military and diplomatic representatives from Australia, Japan, and the US will arrive at Gurney Airport (GUR) the morning of Aug. 27 for an official ceremony. A parade will take place from Bank South Pacific to the Alotau War Memorial, followed by a flyover from the Royal Australian Air Force. A morning service will take place at the war memorial Aug. 28. A large turnout is possible for the parade and flyover events.
Although officials have not identified any threats to the ceremonies, increased security is highly likely in the town through Aug. 28. Tight security is almost certain near GUR, the war memorial, and other anniversary sites. Officers could temporarily block the main road in Alotau to facilitate the parade and ceremonies at the war memorial; localized transport disruptions are likely.
Alotau is approximately 372 km (231 miles) east-southeast of central Port Moresby.

Consider avoiding event venues unless attending. Allow additional time for transport Aug. 26-28, especially near event sites. Follow all instructions from security personnel.
