Warning

Event

Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire in Anon de Moncayo Municipality, Zaragoza Province, Aragon Autonomous Community, as of early Aug. 15. The fire broke out Aug. 13 and is approximately 8,000 hectares (19,768 acres) in size, with a perimeter of 50 km (31 miles). More than 300 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are hampering firefighting efforts. Further wildfire growth is likely over the coming hours and days.

Authorities have evacuated more than 1,500 people from Alcala de Moncayo, Ambel, Anon de Moncayo, Bulbuente, El Buste, Talamantes, Trasmoz, and Vera de Moncayo municipalities. Emergency shelters for evacuated residents are at the Borja, Magallon, and Tarazona sports centers as well as the Old Torellas Hospital. Authorities could expand the mandatory evacuation orders depending on evolving wildfire conditions.

Part of the N-122 Highway, from kilometer 64 to 75, is closed. The wildfire may cause additional localized transport disruptions in the region. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.

Advice

Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
