Trinidad and Tobago: Power outages occurring across Trinidad and Tobago following damaged tower as of late Aug. 16

Power outages occurring across Trinidad and Tobago following damaged tower as of late Aug. 16. Disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

A landslide has damaged an electricity transmission tower in Trinidad and Tobago, causing extensive power outages as of late Aug. 16. Disruptions started occurring at 19:30, and reports indicate that roughly 30 percent of residents across the country are currently without power. Repair operations are ongoing, and officials estimate service will be restored by 23:30; they urge users with power access to limit their use if possible.

Disruptions to business and communications are almost certain to impact blackout-affected areas. Malfunctioning traffic signals may result in transport disruptions and longer driving times. The electrical grid collapse may also cause services at some essential facilities, such as ATMs and filling stations, to be temporarily unavailable.

Advice

Plan accordingly for power supply disruptions. Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies until power is restored. Exercise caution when driving or crossing streets in areas where traffic signals are malfunctioning.
