Tunisia: Air traffic controllers to strike Aug. 25
Air traffic controllers plan to launch a nationwide strike in Tunisia, Aug. 25. Flight disruptions possible. Confirm flights.
Event
Unionized air traffic controllers (ATCs) have announced plans to strike nationwide Aug. 25. The exact time the labor action will begin has not been announced. According to the Office of Civil Aviation and Airports (OACA), the strike is in response to the government's noncompliance with several prior agreements.
The strike date appears to have been chosen deliberately to force the government into concessions. On Aug. 27-28, Tunisia will host the eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in Tunis. While the work stoppage is unlikely to delay the summit, it could certainly prompt disruptions. Unless averted, the strike will likely prompt widespread delays and disruptions to cargo and passenger flights. Residual delays at airports could continue after the strike ends.
Advice
Confirm flights if booked to fly via Tunisian airports, Aug. 25. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Consider alternative travel arrangements if necessary and arrive at airports early to allow extra time to clear passenger processing and airport security.
