Unemployed teachers likely to hold further protests in Agartala, India, through at least mid-October following Sept. 26 clashes.

Warning

Event

Unemployed teachers are likely to stage further protests in Agartala, Tripura State, through at least mid-October to demand the state government restore their jobs, among other things. On Sept. 26, clashes between activists and police left at least 30 teachers injured during a protest march near the Mahatma Gandhi statue; reports indicate nearly 300 protesters were also temporarily detained.

Additional demonstrations are likely near prominent state-level government buildings, public squares, monuments, and along major roadways. Larger gatherings will likely draw hundreds of participants.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor any protests and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Additional clashes between activists and police are possible; violence between security forces and teachers has occurred during previous related protests. Any protest marches and associated security responses may prompt localized transport disruptions.

Context

The Sept. 26 action is the latest in a series of protests by teachers in Tripura State who had lost their jobs in recent years following a court ruling that the process used to recruit them had been unconstitutional - a verdict India's Supreme Court has upheld. At least 10,323 teachers were sacked after years of legal battles; the teachers in the state have been holding nearly daily demonstrations of varying sizes and types to demand reinstatement.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a safe, non-governmental building. Allow additional time for travel near any impacted areas. Heed all official security and travel advisories.
