A magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurred in northern Papua Province, Indonesia, at around 20:34 WIT Sept. 29. The epicenter was about 89 km (55 miles) west-northwest of Abepura. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 20 km (12 miles), and moderate-to-light shaking was probably felt near the epicenter and light shaking throughout parts of central and eastern Papua and much of Highland Papua provinces in Indonesia, as well as northwestern Sanduan Province in Papua New Guinea. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake; however, significant damage is unlikely. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light aftershocks are likely over the coming days.
