Israel, PT: Officials close Jalamah and Salem border crossings after shootout kills IDF officer in northern West Bank early Sept. 14
Officials close Jalamah and Salem border crossings between Israel and northern West Bank after shootout kills IDF officer early Sept. 14.
Event
Israeli Minister of Defense Benny Gantz ordered the indefinite closure of the Jalamah and Salem border checkpoints between Israel and the northern West Bank Sept. 14. The move comes after Palestinian gunmen, notably including a member of the Palestinian Authority (PA) security services, killed an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) officer near Jalamah, West Bank, earlier in the day before being killed by IDF troops themselves; the Jenin Brigade claimed responsibility for the attack. In addition to the closure of the two border crossings, Israeli officials have reportedly ordered the immediate suspension of entry permits for residents of nearby Kafr Dan, the hometown of the gunmen, until further notice.
Transport disruptions are likely across the border between Israel and the northern West Bank until the closed checkpoints reopen. Israeli security forces are likely to maintain an increased security presence in the northern West Bank over the short term.
Advice
Exercise heightened vigilance if operating in the northern West Bank. Prepare for transport disruptions across the Israel-northern West Bank border; plan to use alternative border crossings until officials reopen the Jalamah and Salem checkpoints. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
