Officials have raised the warning for Suwanosejima volcano to Level 3 as of Sept. 29 due to increased activity. Suwanosejima volcano has been erupting since Sept. 24, with volcanic activity increasing from Sept. 26. Officials have recorded 25 eruptions Sept. 24-28. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has warned of further pyroclastic activity up to 2 km (1.2 miles) away from the Otake and Mitake craters, as well as volcanic ash on the leeward side of the volcano. As of Sept. 29, no damage has been reported at Toshima Village, Kagoshima Prefecture, located approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) away from the craters.
Officials have created a 2-km (1.2 miles) exclusion zone around the crater. Entry to the volcano is also restricted. Further eruptions could cause localized transport disruptions; flight delays could occur at Suwanosejima Airport (RJX8) if an eruption creates a significant ash plume. Ground transport disruptions could also occur. Falling ash could cause slick driving conditions on nearby roads and reduced visibility, leading to localized traffic disruptions.

Heed the advice of local authorities and obey restrictions around the volcano. If larger eruptions occur, confirm flight schedules, especially at RJX8. Drive cautiously, as roads may be slippery from volcanic ash. If operating in areas affected by an ash cloud, consider remaining indoors when possible. Individuals who must be outdoors should use face masks and observe other precautions to avoid ash inhalation. Volcanic ash and gases can cause eye irritation and respiratory problems. Do not rub irritated eyes; flush them with water. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.
