Emergency crews working to contain a wildfire in Kostanay Region, Kazakhstan as of early Sept. 5. Evacuations ongoing.
Event
Emergency crews are working to contain a wildfire in Kostanay Region as of early Sept. 5. The fire broke out Sept. 2 and is more than 43,000 hectares (106,000 acres) in size. More than 600 personnel are on-site battling the blaze. Authorities have not provided an estimated containment date for the fire. Hot, dry, and windy conditions are hampering firefighting efforts. Further wildfire growth is possible over the coming hours and days. Kostanay Region declared a local state of emergency
Authorities have evacuated more than 1,800 people from four villages in the north of Kostanay Region. Officials could expand the mandatory evacuation orders depending on evolving wildfire conditions. The fire has destroyed at least 108 buildings, including 85 houses in Amankaragai Village and 6 houses in Ozernoye Village. Reports indicate at least one fatality and around 10 injuries due to the fire.
The wildfire will likely cause localized transport disruptions in the region. Anticipate the status of nearby roads to change over the coming hours and days; authorities could close routes within the wildfire complex and evacuate communities due to fire activity and the needs of response operations. The return of residents could disrupt traffic flows after authorities lift evacuation orders. Low visibility from smoke and possible ashfall could contribute to traffic delays and congestion in the region.
Advice
Heed any evacuation orders. Seek updated information on road conditions if driving in the affected area; road closures and detours will likely cause increased congestion and delays. Individuals not under evacuation warnings should consider remaining inside well-ventilated, air-conditioned spaces to reduce exposure to smoke. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged power outages.
