Local officials have called for an islandwide strike action from Sept. 15 to demand additional government support to confront the deteriorating security situation in Mayotte. Organizers have specifically asked for the closure of all local administration offices and primary schools until further notice. They have also called for the suspension of school vehicle traffic and demanded that parents keep children at home. It is unclear how many people will adhere to the strike.

While the work stoppage is unlikely to affect business operations, related protests denouncing the security situation remain possible. These could occur at government buildings. Protests by parents denouncing the lack of schooling and related transport may also protest. Police will almost certainly deploy to monitor any related demonstrations. Clashes are possible. Traffic disruptions are likely near large demonstrations.

Context

Authorities previously deployed additional security personnel across Mayotte in June due to gang violence; at least seven police officers were injured amid the clashes. Local officials and civil society groups have increasingly criticized recurrent insecurity, including assaults against students and public transportation, illegal roadblocks, and murders, among other crimes.

As a precaution, reconfirm business appointments and travel arrangements Sept. 15. Avoid all possible demonstrations and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If crowds form, leave immediately.
