Reunion: Unions call for multi-sector islandwide strike and protests in Saint-Pierre and Saint-Denis Sept. 29

Unions call for multi-sector strike across Reunion and protests in Saint-Pierre and Saint-Denis, Sept. 29.

Informational

Event

The CGT and other unions have called for a multi-sector islandwide strike Sept. 29 over several grievances, including working and pay conditions, amid the rising cost of living. The following demonstrations are planned from 09:00:

  • Saint-Denis: March from Petit Marche to the Prefecture.

  • Saint-Pierre: March from the town hall to the Prefecture.

It is unclear how many participants the events may draw, nor the level of adherence to the work stoppage. Heightened security and localized road disruptions are likely along the march routes. Clashes with security forces cannot be ruled out if protesters are overly disruptive or forcibly dispersed. Unless averted, the strike could cause disruptions to transport and other services.

Advice

As a precaution, reconfirm business appointments and travel arrangements Sept. 29. Avoid all demonstrations and areas where security forces appear to be deploying. If crowds form, leave immediately.
