Taiwan: A magnitude-5.5 earthquake in the southeast at 10:07 Sept. 19
A magnitude-5.5 earthquake occurred in southeastern Taiwan at around 10:07 Sept. 19.
Event
A magnitude-5.5 earthquake occurred in southeastern Taiwan at around 10:07 Sept. 19. The epicenter was about 66 km (41 miles) south-southwest of Hualien City. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 13 km (8 miles), and strong-to-moderate shaking was probably felt throughout parts of east central Taiwan and light shaking across the rest of Taiwan. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. The earthquake is likely an aftershock of the magnitude-6.8 earthquake that occurred 21:41 Sept. 17. The tremor resulted in one fatality in Yuli Township, Hualien County and 146 injured across Taiwan. Several moderate to light aftershocks have since occurred.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Significant disruptions could occur during shutdowns. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Advice
Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
