Taiwan: Rail, transport disruptions ongoing in eastern areas as of Sept. 22 following earlier earthquake

Rail transport disruptions are ongoing along a section of the Eastern Trunk Line in eastern Taiwan as of Set. 22 following an earlier magnitude 6.6 earthquake that struck off Taitung County Sept. 17. Officials initially suspended rail services between Hualien and Taitung counties along a 106 km (66 miles) section following damages to overhead power lines, tracks, and multiple railway bridges. Officials restored several services Sept. 22, including trains running between Hualien Station and Fenglin as well as between Fuli, Hualien County and Taitung Station. Some bridges, including the Gaoliao and Luntian Bridge in Hualien County, have collapsed. Authorities have closed several rail stations in Hualien County, including Yuli Station in Yuli Township. Authorities are working to repair damaged railways and restore suspended services; repair work is expected to continue through the coming weeks.

Rail service disruptions will almost certainly continue until repair works conclude. Transport disruptions are also likely near damaged roadways and bridges. Commuters will likely seek alternative means of transport in affected areas; crowding on available transport is possible.
