Tunisia: Increased security likely following armed clashes between soldiers and suspected militants on Djebel Selloum, Kasserine Governorate, Sept. 2

Increased security likely after clashes between Tunisian military and suspected militants on Kasserine Governorate's Djebel Selloum Sept. 2.

Informational

Event

The Tunisian military will likely remain deployed in the vicinity of Kasserine Governorate's Djebel Selloum through at least mid-September following armed clashes between soldiers and suspected militants in the area Sept. 2. Authorities reported that the associated exchange of fire killed three militants.

Military forces could establish security checkpoints in the region over the coming days. Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to heightened security measures.

Context

Several terror groups operate in Tunisia. These militant groups regularly attempt to attack security forces, civilians, and foreigners. However, security forces neutralize most complex attacks before they materialize.

The Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM)-affiliated Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade and the Islamic State (IS)-affiliated Jund al-Khilafah are both active in the mountainous regions of Kasserine Governorate. Since 2014, a swath of the mountainous region near the Algeria-Tunisia border has been designated a closed military zone as security forces pursue militants that have entrenched themselves in the area. The focus of security operations has been the Djebel Chaambi, Djebel Sammama, Djebel Selloum, and Djebel Mghilla areas.

Advice

Defer nonessential travel to the Djebel Selloum area until the situation has normalized. Maintain heightened vigilance if operating in rural parts of Kasserine Governorate. Avoid areas where security forces appear to be gathering. Should violence erupt, depart the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure location. Plan for disruptions in areas subject to heightened security measures. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
