A magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurred in Kashgar Prefecture in China's Xinjiang Region at around 14:54 Oct. 16. The epicenter was about 138 km (86 miles) northeast of Shache. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in areas near the epicenter.
