DRC: Political activists call for protests in Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga Province, Oct. 14

Political activists call for protests at Place de la Poste in Lubumbashi, Haut-Katanga Province, DRC, from 08:00 Oct. 14. Avoid protest.

Warning

Event

Political activists have called for two rallies in Lubumbashi Oct. 14. Supporters of the ruling Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UPDS) will gather in support of President Felix Tshisekedi for the 2023 presidential elections, while supporters of the Together for the Republic (EPR) party will gather in support of Moise Katumbi. Participants have planned to gather from 08:00 at Place de la Poste. The rallies have yet to be authorized by local authorities.

Although both Tshisekedi and Katumbi are part of the Union Sacree ruling coalition, competition for the next elections has heightened tensions between supporters of both parties. The protests are likely to attract dozens to several hundred participants.

Should the rallies go ahead as planned, or protesters decide to gather despite a potential ban on protest, security forces will likely deploy to monitor or disperse any gathering that occurs. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in Lubumbashi Oct. 14. The potential for clashes between opposing supporters, or between protesters and security forces is elevated, especially if protesters ignore police orders to disperse.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations that materialize in the coming days. Should protests occur, allow additional time to reach destinations. Leave at the first sign of a confrontation.
