Transport disruptions ongoing as of Oct. 14 after authorities close Damerara Harbour Bridge in Georgetown, Guyana.

Warning

Event

Travel disruptions are ongoing in Georgetown as of Oct. 14 after authorities closed the Damerara Habour Bridge following an Oct. 8 incident where a tanker ship collided with the bridge. Authorities have announced it will likely reopen to light traffic, including personal vehicles but excluding commercial trucks, late Oct. 17 or early Oct. 18. The expected date for the bridge to reopen to commercial truck traffic is currently unclear. Land transport across the Damerara River between Georgetown and its environs has been severely affected, as this is the only bridge across the river for 90 km (56 miles). Crossings are limited to boat traffic until the bridge is repaired.

Disruptions to overland transit and shipment are almost certain over the coming days. Resulting business disruptions are likely.

Advice

Arrange for alternative personal transportation. Plan on transit disruptions and shipping disruptions if moving goods by truck; reconfirm deliveries and arrange alternative transport if necessary. Monitor local media for updates. Heed the instructions of authorities.
