Warning

Event

The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO) has called for a march in Shillong, Meghalaya State, Oct. 14. Activists will march from the U Kiang Nangbah statue at Barik Point to the Meghalaya State Secretariat, the chief ministerial residence, and offices of political parties in the ruling coalition. The start time is unclear, though rallies typically occur from late morning. Organizers are denouncing the use of tear gas to disperse a recent demonstration by teacher unions. Dozens of participants are likely to join the event, defying an ongoing ban on unauthorized public gatherings of over four people within the Police Bazar area.

Authorities will certainly deploy to monitor the march; roadblocks and security cordons are likely to prevent or control the gathering. Police may forcibly disperse crowds, and conduct mass arrests. Localized transport disruptions, including traffic diversions are probable along roadways near rally venues.

Advice

Avoid the protest due to possible clashes. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately. Allow additional travel time near the protest. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
