Warning

Event

Activists will hold a protest march from the BR Ambedkar statue in Parandur village, Kanchipuram District, toward Chennai's State Secretariat building beginning Oct. 17. The purpose of the demonstration is to oppose the government's plan to build a new airport in the Parandur area. The march is scheduled to coincide with the convening of a state assembly session. Organizers claim that around 1,500-2,000 people will participate in the demonstration and reach the State Secretariat Oct. 18.

Authorities will almost certainly monitor the protest march as a precaution and may attempt to disperse the gathering if it is particularly disruptive. Clashes between activists and police are possible. Localized transport disruptions are likely to occur, particularly near Flag Staff and Beach roads in Chennai. Localized business disruptions may occur.

Advice

Avoid the protest march as a precaution. If clashes erupt nearby, depart the area immediately. Allow additional travel time in all protest-affected areas. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
