Climate activists to stage march in Tel Aviv, Israel, Oct. 28; increased security, localized disruptions to transport and business likely.

Warning

Event

Climate activists affiliated with dozens of organizations, notably including the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel (SPNI), are planning to stage a protest march in Tel Aviv Oct. 28. The annual demonstration is scheduled ahead of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27) taking place in Sharm el-Sheikh Nov. 6-18. Activists are demanding that authorities ratify a climate law and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, among other requests. March participants are slated to gather at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art Square at 09:30 before marching to Sharona Park at 11:30 via Sha'ul HaMelech Street, Ibn Gvirol Street, and Eliezer Kaplan Street. The demonstration is scheduled to continue at Sharona Park until activists disperse at 14:00. Thousands of people are likely to participate in the march. Israel Railways will reportedly run additional trains to facilitate the transport of activists to the demonstration.

Increased security and localized disruptions to transport and business will probably impact areas in the vicinity of the march route Oct. 28. Heightened congestion is likely on public transport in Tel Aviv ahead of and amid the demonstration. Clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a precaution. Consider taking alternative routes to circumvent related transport disruptions; prepare for congestion on public transport. If clashes break out, immediately leave the area and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
