The US Embassy in Malaysia issued a security alert Oct. 19 due to recent incidents of violent crime near the 430-440 block of Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Local reports indicate that a foreign tourist was killed in a fight with other foreigners at Zouk Bar at 436 Jalan Tun Razak Oct. 4. Assailants also assaulted and injured a foreigner in a separate incident at the same location Sept. 22. The alert advises US citizens to avoid visiting Zouk Bar and its surrounding areas after 21:00, as well as keep a low profile and remain alert in locations frequented by tourists and foreigners.

Context

Crime generally poses a moderate threat in Kuala Lumpur. Violent crime, such as robberies and assaults, occurs sporadically. Most incidents targeting foreigners occur after dark in and around entertainment districts of the city. Targeted killings occur occasionally in Kuala Lumpur and other Malaysian urban centers, but are rarely directed against foreign nationals. Most incidents are linked to personal and business disputes as well as rivalries between criminal gangs.

Exercise caution and situational awareness in the affected areas and avoid visiting the location at night. Maintain contact with diplomatic representations.
