The US Embassy in Malaysia issued a security alert Oct. 19 due to recent incidents of violent crime near the 430-440 block of Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur. Local reports indicate that a foreign tourist was killed in a fight with other foreigners at Zouk Bar at 436 Jalan Tun Razak Oct. 4. Assailants also assaulted and injured a foreigner in a separate incident at the same location Sept. 22. The alert advises US citizens to avoid visiting Zouk Bar and its surrounding areas after 21:00, as well as keep a low profile and remain alert in locations frequented by tourists and foreigners.
Context
Crime generally poses a moderate threat in Kuala Lumpur. Violent crime, such as robberies and assaults, occurs sporadically. Most incidents targeting foreigners occur after dark in and around entertainment districts of the city.
