Mozambique: Flood threat along the Zambezi River, as of Oct. 12

Event

Flooding is impacting portions of the Zambezi River, Oct. 12. The flooding is due to the planned discharge of water from the Cahora Bassa hydroelectric dam. Hundreds of residents in Caia, Sofala Province, have been asked to evacuate. Several locations downstream have also been impacted, including Tambara (Manica), Moatize, Doa, and Mutarara (Tete), Chemba and Marromeu (Sofala) and Mopeia, Luabo and Chinde (Zambezia).

Authorities could issue further evacuation orders or requests for communities near the Zambezi River over the coming days. Flood-related impacts could include road closures and disruptions to power supply.

Advice

Exercise caution in the impacted locations. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
