Power supply restored in affected areas of Pakistan as of Oct. 14. Lingering disruptions possible.

Warning

Event

Pakistani officials said power supply is restored across the country as of Oct. 14. Power outages began in several areas nationwide 09:30 Oct. 13 due to a national power transmission grid fault. Balochistan, Punjab, and Sindh provinces were most affected, with widespread and prolonged outages reported in cities like Karachi, Multan, and Quetta. Authorities said the disruptions lasted 12 hours. Lingering disruptions are possible through Oct. 14 as services gradually resume.

Temporary commercial and communications disruptions are possible during any outages; cellular and mobile services could be affected. Traffic disruptions and longer driving times are possible due to malfunctioning traffic signals. Power outages could also result in the temporary unavailability of essential services such as ATMs and filling stations. There is an increased security threat during power outages. Blackouts could adversely affect security protocols, including alarm systems and electronic fences; opportunistic criminal activity could increase during electricity outages.

Delays in supply resumption, and/or recurrent outages may prompt protests by opposition parties and civilians. Dozens of people could hold sit-ins or marches in urban centers, especially near government buildings, major intersections, and offices of electricity companies. Security deployment is possible at large rallies, and police may forcibly disperse unruly crowds.

Advice

Conserve batteries and restrict cellphone use to emergencies in case of an extended power outage. For safety reasons, monitor generators while they are operating due to potential fires. Unplug appliances and electronic equipment to protect against surge damage when power resumes. Monitor trusted local media for updates on service resumption schedules. Avoid all protests as a security precaution; do not navigate roadblocks as protesters may react violently. Heed all official advisories.
