A magnitude-5.0 earthquake occurred near northeastern Papua New Guinea at around 02:09 PGT Oct. 11. The epicenter was about 146 km (91 miles) east-southeast of Kokopo. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 76 km (47 miles), and light shaking was probably felt in parts of Bougainville Region, the Lihir Islands, and New Ireland, as well as East New Britain and eastern West New Britain.
