Police are increasing security in Kimbe and surrounding areas in West New Britain Province as of Oct. 12 after 26 prisoners escaped from Lakiemata Prison the previous day. Officials say that several criminals are considered high risk and “dangerous.”
Authorities will likely deploy additional officers in Kimbe in the coming days. Although initial searches have not yielded any prisoners, clashes and/or gunfire exchanges are possible if police locate escapees. Additional search operations are likely and could lead to localized transport disruptions.
