Thailand: APEC Summit to take place in Bangkok Nov. 14-19
Thailand to host APEC Summit in Bangkok Nov. 14-19. Tight security and traffic disruptions likely.
Event
The 2022 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit is scheduled to take place in Bangkok Nov. 14-19. Leaders of the 21 member nations will attend meetings Nov. 18-19. Hundreds of foreign and local delegates are also expected to participate in the summit. The main events will occur at Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre in Khlong Toei District, Bangkok. Officials have declared a three-day holiday in Bangkok and Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan provinces to ease traffic during the summit.
Officials will increase security across Bangkok ahead of and during the summit. Authorities will deploy around 20,000 security personnel for the event and the police will hold security drills Nov. 13-19 to prepare for any incidents that may occur. Checkpoints and random security checks are likely, particularly on roads leading to the summit venues. Security screening delays are also likely at the entrances of major hotels hosting summit participants. Road closures and detours can be expected near the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre and on streets leading to event venues. Traffic delays are likely in the vicinity of event venues, particularly during the arrivals and departures of delegates.
Authorities could periodically close the runways at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) or Don Mueang Airport (DMK) for the arrival and departure of heads of state. Increased security measures are possible at BKK and DMK, which could cause immigration and customs delays.
Protests are possible in the lead-up to and during the summit. Security forces will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Demonstrators may block and/or march along roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Mass arrests may occur if security forces consider any action to violate lese-majeste laws that ban alleged insults against the monarchy.
Advice
If operating in Bangkok, consider avoiding event venues Nov. 14-19 if not attending due to increased security protocols and likely disruptions. Allow additional time for transport if traveling in the vicinity of Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. Carry proper identification documents. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building.
