UK: Unionized railway employees to strike in Scotland Oct. 29

Unionized railway employees in Scotland, UK, to strike Oct. 29. Rail travel disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized railway employees of Scotrail, affiliated with the National Union of Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), plan to strike Oct. 29. The strike relates to ongoing disputes over pay and working conditions and follows an earlier day of action Oct. 10. The strike will affect rail services across Scotland. Scotrail will, however, maintain a limited service between 07:30 and 18:30 on the following routes:

  • Milngavie – Edinburgh Waverley via Glasgow Queen Street (half-hourly service)

  • Glasgow Central – Lanark (hourly service)

  • Glasgow Central – Larkhall (hourly service)

This strike is in addition to RMT employees taking industrial action across the UK on Nov. 5, 7, and 9.

Unless averted, the strike will cause significant disruptions to Scotland's rail network. Lingering disruptions will likely affect rail services after the strikes conclude as operators reposition rolling stock. Available rail services will likely experience crowding, while significant congestion is likely on alternative means of transport. Union members may organize demonstrations, which may cause localized disruption. Further strikes are possible over the coming months.

Advice

Confirm rail services and allow extra time for journeys Oct. 29. Consider alternative transport and book reservations in advance due to increased demand. Follow local travel advice.
