India: Heightened security in effect in Lamhai Namdi, Nagaland State, Nov. 8, following communal violence

Authorities have increased security in the village of Lamhai Namdi as of Nov. 8 in response to recent communal violence. Clashes first erupted between two communities on Nov. 7 in a dispute over land along the border between the Chumukeidma and Peren districts. At least 15 people were reportedly injured and 8-10 homes burned in the violence.

Police have imposed Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code until further notice. Under Section 144, public gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, as are the carrying of weapons and the possession and use of fireworks. Security personnel have warned travelers near Dimapur, Pimla, and other nearby regions to exercise caution.

Officials could expand security measures to other surrounding areas as a precaution or if tensions persist. Further violence cannot be ruled out. Localized business and transport disruptions are possible.

Exercise increased caution if operating in affected areas of Chumukeidma and Peren districts. Strictly heed the instructions of local authorities. Remain courteous and cooperative if approached and questioned by law enforcement personnel. Confirm road status before traveling to locations under curfew or movement restrictions. If any violence erupts nearby, depart the area immediately.
