India: Retired coal miners and supporters to protest at Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi Dec. 5

Retired miners to stage sit-in at Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi, India, Dec. 5.

Warning

Event

Retired coal miners represented by the All India Coal Pensioners' Association, as well as supporters from the All India Association of Coal Executives, plan to stage a sit-in protest (dharna) at Jantar Mantar observatory in New Delhi Dec. 5. The purpose of the gathering is to demand that the government reform miners' pension programs. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw.

Authorities will likely increase security near the observatory as a precaution. Violence is unlikely but low-level confrontations between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out. Localized transport disruptions are possible in the immediate vicinity of the protest site, especially near Tolstoy Road and Sansad Marg Street.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a standard security precaution. Allow extra time to reach destinations near the impacted area through the evening of Dec. 5. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
