Informational

Event

Indonesia will host the 17th G20 Summit in Nusa Dua, Bali, Nov. 15-16. The heads of state from 19 countries and the European Union (EU) are scheduled to attend the summit. Other related events will occur from Nov. 10. Around 6,500 delegates are also expected to participate in the summit. The main meeting will take place at Apurva Kempinski, while other event venues include Garuda Wisnu Kencana (GWK) Cultural Park in South Kuta, Ngurah Rai Mangrove Forest in Denpasar, and Hotel Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua.

Authorities will likely increase security and implement strict traffic controls around Apurva Kempinski Bali and other event venues. Similar measures are likely at hotels where participants are staying, including Apurva Kempinski, Conrad, Hilton, the Laguna, Melia Bali, Nusa Dua Beach Hotel and Spa, St. Regis, and the Westin. Officials will deploy more than 18,000 security personnel during the summit. There have not been any publicized threats to the G20 Summit; however, security forces may randomly search pedestrians and vehicles as a precautionary measure. Road closures and traffic detours are likely, especially when participants are traveling to and from the airport to their hotels and the summit venue. An odd-even vehicle license plate system will be in effect Nov. 11-17 on 10 routes in the Denpasar area and Badung Regency.

Attendees will likely arrive and depart via Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). Increased security at DPS during the summit may lead to possible congestion and delays in clearing customs and security screenings. Authorities will restrict the operating hours of commercial passenger flights at DPS Nov. 14 and 17.

Protests are possible in the lead-up to and during the summit. Security forces will likely monitor any demonstrations that materialize and may attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Isolated clashes between activists and police cannot be ruled out. Authorities have stated that the police will detain and deport foreigners that participate in protests during the event.

Advice

If operating in Bali, consider avoiding event venues if not attending due to increased security protocols and likely disruptions. Allow additional time for transport if traveling in Nusa Dua Nov. 15-16. Carry proper identification documents. Remain cooperative if stopped by officials for checks. Heed all official transport and security advisories. Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately leave the area and seek shelter at a safe nongovernment building.
