Increased security measures are likely in Mamoudzou through at least late November amid gang violence. Clashes occurred between rival gangs in the Kaweni, M'Tsapere, Majicavo, and Doujani districts Nov. 14-20, reportedly leaving at least one person dead and several others injured. Gang members also reportedly erected roadblocks, damaged properties, and cut water supply pipelines.
Further gang-related violence and clashes between security forces and gang members are possible. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely islandwide in the coming days.
Context
Authorities previously deployed additional security personnel across Mayotte in June due to gang violence; at least seven police officers were injured amid related clashes. Local officials and civil society groups have increasingly criticized recurrent insecurity, including assaults against students and public transportation, illegal roadblocks, and murders, among other crimes, and called for islandwide strike action in September to demand additional government support.
