Solomon Islands: A magnitude-5.4 offshore earthquake occurs off the coast of Guadalcanal Island Nov. 24
A magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurs southeast of Guadalcanal Island, Solomon Islands, at around 20:15 Nov. 24. No immediate reports of damage.
Event
A magnitude-5.4 earthquake occurred off the southeast coast of Guadalcanal Island at around 20:15 Nov. 24. The epicenter was about 25 km (16 miles) southwest of Malango. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 10 km (6 miles), and light-to-moderate shaking was probably felt in parts of Guadalcanal Island, as well as light shaking across the central Solomon Islands. There have been no initial reports of damage or casualties as a result of the earthquake' and significant damage is unlikely. The quake is likely an aftershock from the magnitude-7.0 earthquake which struck in the same area at around 13:03 Nov. 22. It could take several hours until authorities can conduct comprehensive damage assessments, especially in remote areas. Light-to-moderate aftershocks are likely over the coming days. The event has not prompted any tsunami advisories.
Officials may temporarily shut down transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to check for damage. Minor disruptions could occur during shutdowns, but service will likely resume quickly if no damage is found. Utility outages are possible, particularly near the earthquake's epicenter.
Advice
Out of an abundance of caution, consider vacating multistory buildings where shaking occurred until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Monitor and plan for aftershocks.
