Disruptions ongoing following magnitude-7.0 offshore earthquake off Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, Nov. 22. Power outages, damage reported.

Disruptions are ongoing across parts of the Solomon Islands as of late Nov. 22 following a magnitude-7.0 offshore earthquake that occurred in the Solomon Sea off Guadalcanal Island at around 13:03 SBT Nov. 22. The initial quake was followed by a magnitude-6.0 aftershock around 13:37 and dozens of further aftershocks have occurred since, a number of which have been registered at magnitude-5.0 or above. Power outages are ongoing across Honiara as of late Nov. 22 and radio services have also been disrupted. Minor damage has been reported to a building at Honiara International Airport (HIR) and assessments are ongoing to ascertain the level of damage caused across Guadalcanal Island. Government offices, schools, and many businesses in Honiara were closed Nov. 22 following the quake. No casualties have been reported in relation to the earthquake.
The epicenter of the initial quake was located about 56 km (35 miles) southwest of Honiara. The tremor occurred at a depth of about 14 km (9 miles), and moderate-to-very strong shaking was probably felt in Guadalcanal Island, with weak-to-light shaking likely throughout most of central and southern Solomon Islands.

Plan accordingly for aftershocks. Consider vacating multistory buildings if operating in affected areas until authorities confirm their structural integrity. Allow additional time for air and road travel, as aftershocks may prompt brief disruptions. Seek updated information on road conditions before driving in hilly areas in the affected region due to potential landslides.
