South Korea: Cargo truckers to hold indefinite nationwide strike from 00:01 Nov. 24

Trucker union plans indefinite strike in South Korea from 00:01 Nov. 24. Business and shipping disruptions likely. Protests possible.

Warning

Event

The Cargo Truckers' Solidarity union affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions in South Korea plans to hold an indefinite strike from 00:01 Nov. 24. The action will occur due to various demands, including minimum pay guarantees. Over 25,000 members will join the work stoppage; non-unionized drivers may also participate. Previous strikes have caused significant nationwide commercial and shipping disruptions.

Unless averted, the strike will seriously disrupt goods transport, especially of fuel and automobiles via major ports and industrial complexes such as Pohang, Ulsan, and Yeosu. Supply chain disruptions are possible if the strike is prolonged for several days. Increased security is likely at strike-related protests; activists typically gather outside large factories and port offices. Well-attended rallies may cause localized transport disruptions, especially if participants block roads with vehicles. Significant violence is unlikely, though skirmishes between police and disruptive protesters cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid protests and navigating roadblocks as a standard security precaution. Confirm road status, as well as shipping and delivery schedules throughout the action. Seek alternative shipping modes for time-sensitive consignment. Heed all security and traffic advisories.
