Thailand: Loy Krathong celebrations to take place nationwide Nov. 8

Loy Krathong celebrations to take place across Thailand Nov. 8. Increased security, localized disruptions likely near event sites.

Informational

Event

Thailand will celebrate Loy Krathong Festival nationwide Nov. 8. Thousands of people have participated in related events in past years and large events will occur especially along major waterways in several cities, including Bangkok and Chiang Mai. The main events in Bangkok will take place at Klong Ong Ang, as well as several public parks and historic sites in the capital.

During the festival, authorities will increase security checks and patrols across Thailand, especially around main celebration venues. Transport disruptions are likely. In the past, authorities banned cargo ships from traversing a section of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok during the festival. Airlines have also canceled and rescheduled flights at Chiang Mai International Airport (CNX) in recent years as celebrations involve the releasing of sky lanterns. Petty crime, such as theft and pickpocketing, typically heightens during the holiday period.

Advice

Prepare for increased security and localized disruptions at event sites, religious sites, and transportation hubs. Confirm flights at CNX during the festival. Follow all official instructions and carry proper identification at all times. Closely guard valuables in crowded areas. Heed all official advisories and remain cooperative if stopped by authorities for security and health checks.
