Tunisian authorities have increased security measures in Djerba ahead of the 18th Francophonie Summit, Nov. 19-20. Officials from the 88 member nations are expected to attend. Official meetings will take place at the Francophonie Village, located at the Djerba Explore Park. The Media Center will be established at the Djerba Sun Club Hotel.

Tunisian activists have staged demonstrations in the lead-up to the summit in order to highlight their grievances against President Kais Saied to the international community. On Nov. 18, clashes occurred in the nearby city of Zarzis; security forces used force to disperse protesters. Additional protests are possible in nearby cities and long roads leading to Djerba.

Heightened security measures, localized transport disruptions, and heavy congestion are likely in Djerba through Nov. 20. Official delegations will most likely travel to the island through the Djerba-Zarzis International Airport (DJE). Air travel disruptions are possible.
