UK: Pro-independence activists to demonstrate in Scottish urban centers Nov. 23

Pro-independence activists to demonstrate in Scottish urban centers, UK, Nov. 23; increased security, disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

Activists supporting the Scottish independence movement plan to demonstrate in towns and cities across Scotland Nov. 23. The purpose of the action is to demand a referendum on independence; the rallies coincide with the UK Supreme Court ruling that the Scottish Parliament cannot unilaterally call a referendum. Demonstrations are planned at the following times and locations:

  • Edinburgh: Holyrood Parliament, 17:15

  • Aberdeen: Saint Nicholas Square, 17:30

  • Borders: Selkirk Square, 18:30

  • Dumfries: Town Centre, 17:30

  • Dundee: City Square, 17:30

  • Fort William: Fort William High Street, 18:30

  • Glasgow: BBC Scotland, 13:00 and Concert Hall Steps, 17:30

  • Greenock: Cathcart Square, 17:15

  • Inverness: Inverness Townhouse, 18:30

  • Inverurie: Town Hall, 17:30

  • Lochgilphead: Front Green, 12:00

  • Orkney: Saint Magnus Cathedral, 17:15

  • Perth: Concert Hall Plaza, 17:30

  • Skye: Portree, 17:30

  • Stirling: Murray Place, 17:30

Further rallies in additional locations are possible. Attendance will vary by location but could reach into the thousands at larger gatherings, most likely in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate the actions. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions. Public transport services could be canceled or diverted. The rallies are likely to proceed peacefully but isolated scuffles with security services cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons. Bystanders are unlikely to be directly targeted in any violence but would face an indirect threat of harm.

Advice

Avoid all rallies as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in affected locations Nov. 23.
