Heightened security is likely as of Dec. 12 at the Chaman-Spin Boldak border crossing, located on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, due to clashes. Pakistani officials reported at least six deaths and 17 injuries due to firing and shelling from Afghanistan Dec. 11; the casualties included civilians. Afghan authorities stated the action was accidental. A brief border closure following the incident has ended after bilateral talks.

Authorities on both sides of the border will almost certainly maintain heightened security measures, including deploying additional personnel, in the coming days. The Chaman-Spin Boldak crossing is approximately 100 km (59 miles) southeast of Kandahar city, Afghanistan, and about 100 km (62 miles) northwest of Quetta, Pakistan.
