Afghanistan: Protests possible into late December in reaction to Taliban's restrictions on education for females

Protests to oppose the Ministry of Education's plan to prohibit women from pursuing higher education are possible across Afghanistan over the coming days. On Dec. 22, activists gathered at several university campuses to denounce the government's recent suspension of women's access to university studies; Taliban forces forcibly dispersed several of the demonstrations and arrested a number of protesters. Although no group has as yet announced time and location details for specific demonstrations, related gatherings would be most likely in urban centers, such as Kabul and Herat, especially near university campuses, government buildings, prominent squares in city centers, and along main thoroughfares. While participation may vary by location, any protests that materialize are unlikely to draw large crowds.

Increased security is almost certain near any sites where demonstrations occur. Security personnel will likely resort to the use of force, including tear gas and live ammunition, to quickly disperse any gatherings. Though large gatherings are unlikely, localized transport disruptions near any that may materialize.
